“It is difficulties that show what men are.” - Epictetus
Brother,
When I think about the experiences that have shaped me most, my mind does not go first to comfort or success. It goes to difficulty, and the ways hardship has developed me in ways comfort never could.
The moments that leave the deepest mark are often the ones that demand endurance and a response. It is those responses that shape our character, build resilience, and ultimately lead to growth. When we move through difficult seasons and come out the other side, we often realize we are no longer the same person who first entered them.
Some of those moments came during my football career. There were periods when I did not have much money and life felt uncertain. I remember going from practice to practice in the pouring rain, my body exhausted but knowing the work still had to be done. There were also moments when decisions were made above me that made me question where I stood and what my future in the game would look like.
Those situations were challenging, but what is more significant is what they required from me. They tested whether I would continue to show up with discipline when very little around me felt stable. They forced me to decide whether my standards would be shaped by my circumstances or by my character.
Difficulty does not arrive at a convenient time, and it does not ask whether you feel prepared. After four years away from home, just as life began to feel more settled, I was confronted with a life-threatening illness. The lesson remained the same: difficulties will always arise, but each time you face them and move through them, you emerge on the other side a more resilient man.
Looking back, those difficult periods were not separate from my growth. They were part of it. Each challenge demanded something of me, and each time I responded, I became a little more resilient than before.
At Path to Becoming, we believe resilience exists within everyone. Life will present challenge after challenge, but each time you face it and move through it, you continue evolving into a stronger version of yourself. That is the journey we are all on - our own path to becoming.
Stay strong, even when you are not. It’s okay, you are not alone.
With love always,
Michael Argyrides
