Theme of the Week: Befriending Yourself
Brother,
Earlier this week, we spoke about what it means to befriend yourself - to treat yourself with the same patience, understanding, and respect you offer others.
This weekend is about putting that into practice.
Your goal is to notice how you speak to yourself when something does not go your way. It could be a mistake, a setback, or even just a frustrating moment. Try to pause for a split second and notice your inner dialogue. What is being said? What is the tone? Oftentimes, you may notice yourself being critical or engaging in negative self-talk.
Directly after noticing your inner dialogue, ask yourself a simple question: Would I speak to a friend this way?
If the answer is no, take a moment to adjust the self-talk.
You do not need to force anything overly positive. Just aim for something more fair, balanced, and supportive. Instead of being harsh, try to respond with compassion. Instead of tearing yourself down, acknowledge the effort. What might you say to a friend if they were going through what you were going through?
This is how to start befriending yourself. The first step of this process is becoming aware of your inner dialogue. The next step is choosing to shift the narrative and respond to yourself in a way that supports your growth and mindset.
Like anything, this takes practice. Your first reaction may still be critical. That is okay. What matters is what you choose next.
Over time, these small shifts begin to change the relationship you have with yourself and the world around you. You become more confident and self-assured, while eliminating the need for perfectionism and external validation.
This weekend, keep it simple. Notice the negative self talk, and adjust it to more balanced and compassionate statement.
Stay strong, even when you are not. It's okay, you are not alone.
With love always,
