Theme of the Week: A Matter of Perspective
Brother,
Earlier this week, I shared that one of the biggest lessons cancer taught me was about perspective.
Looking back, I realized that during one of the hardest seasons of my life, I naturally believed things would work out. I carried hope into uncertainty. I trusted that no matter how difficult the road became, I would find a way through it.
What surprised me was how much harder it became to hold onto that same outlook once life returned to normal. It made me realize that a positive outlook is something we need to practice everyday.
Our minds naturally drift toward uncertainty, self-doubt, and worst-case scenarios. That's part of being human. But just because a thought enters our mind doesn't mean we have to accept it as truth. We have the ability to challenge it, reframe it, and choose a perspective that helps us move forward instead of keeping us stuck.
This weekend, I'd encourage you to spend a few minutes strengthening that habit.
Exercise 1: Play the Positive "What If" Game
When you catch yourself imagining the worst possible outcome, pause for a moment.
Instead of asking, "What if everything goes wrong?" ask yourself:
"What if everything works out better than I expected?"
Then write down three realistic ways the situation could turn out in your favour.
This exercise can help remind you that your mind often gives far more attention to negative possibilities than positive ones, and helps restore a more healthy balance.
Exercise 2: Look Back To Look Ahead
Think about a moment in your life when you were deeply worried about the future.
Maybe it was a job, a relationship, your health, school, or another season of uncertainty.
Write down how things turned out fine or led you somewhere better.
This exercise gives your brain concrete proof that things often have a way of working out in your favour.
Exercise 3: Add "Yet"
If you catch yourself thinking negatively:
"This isn't working."
"I can't do this."
"Nothing is changing."
Simply add one word: Yet.
"This isn't working...yet."
"I can't do this...yet."
"Nothing is changing...yet."
That one small word reminds us that today's reality doesn't have to become tomorrow's conclusion. Growth takes time, healing takes time, and progress is rarely linear.
Perspective doesn't change our circumstances overnight, but it often changes how we experience them. As Epictetus reminded us this week, it isn't always the event itself that disturbs us, but the judgment we place upon it.
My hope for you this weekend is simple: choose a perspective that gives you permission to hope. Not because life is guaranteed to unfold exactly as you want it to, but because hope, faith, and optimism are often the very things that give us the strength to keep moving forward.
Have a wonderful weekend.
Stay strong, even when you are not. It's okay, you are not alone.
With love always,
Michael Argyrides
